What are UGC ads?
UGC ads are paid video ads made to look like something a real customer would post: one person talking to their phone camera and showing a product in their own life. UGC stands for user-generated content. Most are UGC-style, made by paid creators or AI presenters, and run from the brand's own ad account.
Also answers: What does UGC ads mean?
Where the term comes from
"UGC" started as a description of content customers post on their own: reviews, unboxings, photos. Advertisers noticed those casual videos often held attention better than studio ads, so "UGC ads" came to mean any ad built from that kind of footage, or made to look like it. When people search "UGC ads meaning", they're usually asking about the second, commissioned kind.
The three things people mean by "UGC ads"
- Genuine customer content used in an ad with the customer's written permission.
- UGC-style creator ads: a paid creator films a selfie-style video from the brand's brief, and the brand licenses it for ads.
- AI UGC: the same format, with an AI-generated presenter delivering the script.
What a typical UGC ad looks like
Vertical 9:16 video, one person talking to the camera, captions on every line, and the product shown in real use. Most run 15 to 30 seconds and follow five beats: a hook in the first two to three seconds, the problem, the product, a reason to believe, and one call to action.
Where they run
Mostly as paid ads in Meta (Facebook and Instagram Reels and Stories), TikTok and YouTube Shorts, run from the brand's own ad account. Brands also reuse them on product pages and in email. Because the brand owns or licenses the video, the creator's follower count doesn't matter, which is the main difference from influencer marketing.
ScrollStop Labs scripts and produces UGC-style video ads with AI presenters for DTC brands. You can see spec examples, with the hook behind each one, on our work page.
