How do UGC ads work?
A UGC ad works by looking like the content around it in the feed, so viewers give it a few seconds instead of skipping. It opens with a hook the viewer recognises, names a problem, shows the product in use, gives one concrete reason to believe, and ends with a single call to action.
The five beats
- Hook (0 to 3 seconds): a spoken line and on-screen text the viewer recognises, like "Bloated by 3 p.m. every day?"
- Problem: the frustration in the viewer's own words.
- Product: shown in hand and in use, with one concrete detail.
- Reason to believe: personal experience, a demo or a fact from the label.
- Call to action: one next step, such as "tap to try it".
Why the format holds attention
Feeds on TikTok, Reels and Shorts are full of people talking to their phones. An ad that looks the same doesn't trigger the "skip, it's an ad" reflex as quickly, so it gets a few seconds to make its point. A familiar face-to-camera delivery also reads as a recommendation rather than a pitch.
Why testing is part of how they work
The ad platform's algorithm decides who sees each ad and shifts budget to the ones that convert. Most individual ads don't win: Motion's 2026 benchmark found 7.56% of UGC ads became top spenders. So UGC ads work as a system. You produce several versions with different hooks and angles, let the platform find the winner, then make more in the winning direction.
What breaks them
A slow intro, a logo before the point, more than one message, or claims the product page can't support.
ScrollStop Labs scripts and produces UGC-style video ads with AI presenters for DTC brands. You can see spec examples, with the hook behind each one, on our work page.
