What is UGC on TikTok?
On TikTok, UGC means videos made by ordinary users or creators rather than brands, filmed natively in the app's vertical, sound-on style. Brands use TikTok UGC organically, as standard in-feed ads, or as Spark Ads that boost a creator's original post with their permission and keep its likes and comments.
Three ways brands use TikTok UGC
- Organic: posting UGC-style videos on the brand's own account, or reposting customer videos with permission.
- In-feed ads: uploading UGC-style videos to TikTok Ads Manager and running them under the brand name. TikTok recommends 9:16 vertical for these.
- Spark Ads: boosting an existing organic post. According to TikTok, all views, likes, comments, shares and follows from the boost are credited to the original post.
What works on TikTok specifically
- Sound designed in from the start: a voice to camera and audio that make sense together, plus captions for anyone watching muted.
- Native editing: quick cuts, text on screen, a creator speaking straight to camera.
- Hooks that feel like the start of a normal TikTok rather than an ad.
- Keeping key text and faces inside the safe zone, away from the caption and buttons.
Rules to know
Creators posting paid content on their own accounts need to turn on TikTok's content disclosure. Realistic AI-generated video has to carry an AI label under TikTok's AI-generated content rules, and TikTok may apply one automatically. Ads run from Ads Manager are labelled as sponsored by default.
ScrollStop Labs scripts and produces UGC-style video ads with AI presenters for DTC brands. You can see spec examples, with the hook behind each one, on our work page.
