How do you test ad creatives on Facebook?
A common approach is one campaign and one broad audience, three to five creatives per ad set that differ in one variable, equal budgets, and no edits during the first days. Judge early attention on hook rate and click-through, then decide on cost per purchase once each ad has spent enough to be meaningful.
A simple setup
- One testing campaign separate from your scaling campaign.
- Broad audience so the creative, not narrow targeting, drives results.
- Three to five ads per ad set that differ in one variable.
- Equal budgets for each ad set you're comparing.
- No edits for the first few days. Changes reset learning and muddy the result.
Variations on this setup are discussed at length by media buyers in r/FacebookAds. There's no single official method.
What to measure, in order
- Hook rate (3-second plays ÷ impressions): does the opening stop people?
- Hold rate (ThruPlays ÷ 3-second plays): does the middle keep them?
- Click-through rate: does the offer interest them?
- Cost per purchase or ROAS: does it sell?
Deciding winners
Cut clear losers early on attention metrics if they're far behind the rest. Decide real winners on cost per purchase once each ad has spent enough to be meaningful. A common practitioner rule is at least one or two times your target cost per purchase.
Moving winners to scale
Duplicate the winning ad into your main campaign, keeping its post ID if you want to keep the social proof (likes and comments). Then use what made it win to brief the next round.
