How long should UGC ads be?
Most UGC ads run 15 to 30 seconds, and some long-running ads go to 40 to 60 seconds. Length matters less than the opening: viewers decide in the first two to three seconds. Keep one message, cut every line that doesn't move the story, and test a shorter cut of any winner.
Rough lengths by job
| Length | Good for |
|---|---|
| 6–15 s | Retargeting, reminders, one-line offers |
| 15–30 s | Most cold-traffic product ads |
| 30–60 s | Products that need a demo or more explanation |
These are working ranges from common practice, not platform rules. TikTok allows in-feed videos up to 10 minutes, and Meta limits some partnership ads in Stories to 60 seconds, so platform limits rarely decide the length for you.
What actually decides it
The first two to three seconds. If the hook fails, length doesn't matter because nobody sees the rest. After that, every line should earn its place. A good test is to read the script aloud and cut any sentence that doesn't move the story from problem to product to action.
Script length
Time yourself reading the script aloud at a natural, unhurried pace, including the call to action. That's the ad's length before editing. If it runs long, cut whole sentences rather than speaking faster: rushed delivery sounds like an ad.
Test the cut, not just the hook
When an ad wins, make a shorter version that keeps the same hook and drops the slowest middle section. Shorter cuts often work well for retargeting audiences who already know the product.
ScrollStop Labs scripts and produces UGC-style video ads with AI presenters for DTC brands. You can see spec examples, with the hook behind each one, on our work page.
