AI UGC vs real creators: which performs better?
It depends on what you measure. In self-reported 2026 tests on Meta, human creator ads usually won on click-through rate, while AI UGC often won on return on ad spend because it cost far less per video and allowed many more tests. Most experienced buyers now use both.
Reported test results (self-reported)
| Test | Human UGC | AI UGC |
|---|---|---|
| $15K skincare test, Meta (source) | 2.8x ROAS, 1.2% CTR; 8 videos ≈ $2,100 | 2.4x ROAS, 1.1% CTR (best 5); 25 videos ≈ $250 |
| $100K, 220 videos (source) | 2.3x ROAS, 2.4% CTR | 2.8x ROAS, 1.9% CTR |
Both are individual advertisers' Reddit write-ups, not controlled studies. Your product, audience and production quality will change the outcome.
How to read it
- Attention: human creators tended to win on click-through in both reports.
- Efficiency: AI was far cheaper to produce, which allowed many more variations per dollar. In one test that tipped return on ad spend towards AI; in the other, human ads still returned more.
- Cost per video: roughly $5 to $30 for self-serve AI (Hoox) vs $150 to $500 for mid-level creators (Conversion.is).
Which should you use?
Neither wins everywhere. AI is strongest for exploring many angles and hooks quickly. Creators are strongest for physical demos, genuine stories and scaling a proven idea. The common pattern among experienced buyers is to use both: find what works cheaply, then invest in it.
